One thousand years ago in the valley of Kashmir, a great tantrika, Rajanaka Kshemaraja, wrote his masterpiece: the Pratyabhijña-hrdayam; “the essence of the Recognition philosophy” or “the heart of the teachings on Recognition”—recognition, that is, of oneself as an expression of the universal divine Consciousness.
Welcome to The Recognition Sutras, a powerful and revelatory spiritual masterpiece, and one of the primary sources for the study and practice of Tantric Shaivism.
Accurately translated and fully explained here for the first time, this course is breathtaking in its brevity and stunning in its power.
Have you have ever asked yourself these questions?
How may I be free of suffering?
What is the fundamental nature of a human being?
How do we acquire valid insight, undistorted by our past conditioning?
Is consciousness a static witness or a dynamic process?
Does awareness really create reality?
"The Kashmiri Shaivite doctrine of Self-recognition maps the journey through which absolute consciousness becomes human consciousness and then expands to recognise its non-difference from the Absolute.
Hareesh, (Christopher Wallis), has given us a reliable and graceful translation of the text and its commentary. I recommend it both for the elegance of the text itself, and for the elegance of Wallis’ translation"
~ Sally Kempton, author of Meditation for the Love of It and Awakening Shakti.
This course is for you if:
You want to immerse yourself in the philosophy of Tantrik Yoga and dive deep into one of its foundational texts
You would like to learn some of the most vital and effective practices ever discovered by the Tantrik tradition (found in Chapter 18 of the text, these have never been translated accurately before). These are the meditations taught in the text itself, and are said by the tradition to be a complete sadhana—that is, all you need to realize your true nature and experience liberation.
You want depth of insight and recognition of your true nature but live a full life and therefore have limited opportunity for study. You desire a focused course that cuts out anything extraneous and goes right to the core of the teachings, without losing any of the meaning.
You want access to the expertise of a professional Sanskrit scholar who is also a long-term practitioner.
This course is incredible; Filled with truth that strikes deep, reminders of how to apply it to your daily life and new ways of viewing spiritual truth in light of modern physics. If I could make it required viewing for any spiritual seeker, I would.

“I first discovered the Pratyabhijña-hrdayam, or the heart of the teaching of recognition, over three decades ago. I was seventeen years old, standing beside the front desk of the Siddha Yoga Meditation Center in Seattle and intruigued by this book with its ridiculously long Sanskrit title.
I received my first coherant explanation of the text from Swamini Chidvilasananda who gave me a sense of the works profundity and importance. Subsquently I heard talks from Sally Kempton (then Swarmini Durganada), as well as Paul Muller-Ortega, my first mentor and best model for being a scholar practitioner.
For my scholarly understanding of the text I am deeply indebted to the most acomplished living scholar of Shivism, Alexis Sanderson, Professor emeritus of All Souls College at Oxford University. It is not an exaguration to say that much of whatever merit exists in my translation of Ksemaraja’s words is due to Sanderson’s patient tutorage, while its faults are mine alone.
Humble acknowledgements to the great Kula Masters who revealed the Recognition Sutras; Mahamahopadhyaya Rajanaka Ksemaraja, the King of Contentment, holder of the Trika and Krama lineages, and to his guru, Mahamahopadhyaya Rajanaka Abhinava Gupta, and to all the other masters of those lineages, who were both fully awake and embodied. May we follow their light filled footsteps.”

“Hareesh (has) planted a seed of hope that the world is a loving place and showed me how to tap into this loving energy. Silence, stillness, and deep breathing are now a vital part of my everyday life. I thank Hareesh for this.”
“Only at the feet of a few High Lamas of the Tibetan Buddhist Tradition have I ever felt something similar to what happens when I watch and hear Christopher Wallis, (Hareesh) speak.”
“Christopher Wallis is a gifted scholar. This course skillfully unpacks one of the key texts of yogic wisdom, and does so with thoroughness, insight and depth.”

“With this new work, Wallis is offering Oxford-quality Sanskrit education in sutra-sized chunks made for walking.
His ear for poetry and paradox means that he doesn't sacrifice accuracy for inspiration. Somehow he renders the bitter ascetic verses precisely, but sweetened with the Tantric mood of his personal path.

Frequently Asked Questions...
How long will it take to complete this course?
There are 23 videos, 7 contemplations and 5 audio practices to support your learning. We recommend watching the videos at your own pace and revisiting them as you wish. There are eighteen sutras in this course, a pace of not more than one sutra per week is advised.
Do I have time for this?
We recommend a gentle pace to allow for teachings to reveal themselves and practices to integrate the teachings. Twenty to thirty minutes per day is sufficient. The study guides act as your notes, so you can simply watch and absorb. Additionally, you may take another hour per week to do practices and engage in the contemplation questions given in the study guides.
If you prefer audio to video, you can download the mp3s of the videos and listen to them while walking or driving.
This is why we chose this format — with each teaching given in a bite-sized chunk (between 4 and 14 minutes) you are much more likely to keep going through the course to get to the deeper nuggets of wisdom at the end.
Is this a new translation?
Yes. Phd Sanskrit scholar Hareesh spent seven years creating a fresh and accessible translation and commentary for the 21st century, one rigorously faithful to the original Sanskrit yet both readable and relatable.
Is there guidance on how I can integrate these teachings into my practice, teaching and/or life?
Yes. The Study Guides present exercises and contemplation questions and the guided meditations provide practical ways to integrate the teachings into your everyday life.
